wine recs: two new selections

critor2002b.gifWe've enjoyed two new selections this New Year's holiday:

The first is a white wine we had first at A.O.C. in Los Angeles: a Torrontes from Crios de Susana Balbo. Torrontes is the varietal, and it's a lovely white that (we believe) goes well with seafood and with other foods which might find a Chardonnay too...much. We enjoyed the 2003; Robert Parker gave the 2002 a rating of 88 points, noting that it "sport[s] a gorgeously expressive nose of white peaches and melons . . . a fleshy, medium-bodied, satin-textured wine. Rich and lush, it coats the palate with thick layers of yellow fruits whose flavors linger in its long finish." Reasonably priced, it's a nice white to have on hand.

quintessence.jpgWe also enjoyed Quintessence 2000 from Château Pesquié, which earned a 92+ from Robert Parker. A blend of 40% Syrah and 60% Grenache, it's very nicely balanced. "The 2000 'Quintessence' is amazing stuff. A formidably endowed, inky purple offering, it is full-bodied, dense, chewy and loaded with broodingly backward, thick flavors of blackberries, cherries and licorice," said Parker. We're very happy to have found it locally, and encourage you to seek it out.

Happy 2004!
