consider yourself a chicagoan?

cityseal.jpg Eric Zorn, a columnist with the Chicago Tribune, admitted that he didn't know who Ray Rayner was. Acknowledging that being a Chicagoan isn't just a matter of an address and a few years, Zorn challenged his readers to take the "Are You a Real Chicagoan?" test.

I admit...a few of the questions stumped me, and a few had me pacing the hallway. And if I hadn't paid attention to my parents' conversations when I was younger I probably would have missed a few more, since some of the questions are clearly from my parents' era, not mine.

In this spirit of enjoying Chicago trivia, here's the Chicago Public Library's explanation of the great city's seal. This is one of several information pages on Chicago symbols prepared by the library. Most of us (from Chicago) know "urbs in horto" and "I Will," but I didn't know the origin of the "I Will" figure, or the meaning of the other elements on the city seal.
