zabar the star!

Had The Today Show not been preempted here in Southern California by the broadcast of the Reagan memorial service we would have been tickled to see Wallace's half-brother, Zabar, strut his stuff before a national audience this morning. The photo (click to enlarge) is of Zabar and Daphna, his owner, participating in an obedience demonstration before the crowd in Rockefeller Center.

Because Zabar is less than a year older than Wallace, Daphna's descriptions of his behavior gave us a preview of some of Wallace's traits. We met online, via the Corgi-L list, and Daphna was a great source of information and encouragement.

Zabar and his family now live in NYC, having moved from San Francisco a few years ago. For more great photos of Zabar in action, you can visit his site, which has some great puppy photos, and news of his latest accomplishments.

The study which prompted the segment on canine intelligence and obedience has been getting a lot of media coverage this week. Details here via Wired. Some dogs seem to exhibit "fast mapping," the same type of process that children use to learn words and their meanings. Rico, the border collie in the study, seems to have roughly the same comprehension as a three-year-old child. Interesting stuff.
